Cafe Hopping in Ipoh: #4 The Morning After Cafe Review

Hey guys, I'm back again with a new cafe review for the 'Cafe Hopping in Ipoh' series. This time I'll be reviewing The Morning After Cafe which is located inside the M ROOF Hotel. If you're looking for a place that serves decent western food for breakfast, brunch and lunch, then this might be the right place for you. Also, their food is quite Instagram-worthy, I'm sure all foodies out there wouldn't want to miss this!

The interior design of The Morning After Cafe
Overall, the cafe has a quite dull and gloomy atmosphere. The walls are painted black and they're using mostly black and dark coloured furniture. This is definitely not your average Instagram-worthy cafe because it's not the usual cafe that has bright and colourful interior and decoration.

The photo was edited with high brightness so that you can view better its interior.

I went there for lunch and it was my first visit to this cafe. Apparently, the cafe is well-known for serving some really good breakfast and brunch menus. Upon looking at the menu, I noticed that their food was pricey (well probably because it is located inside a hotel and the cafe serves mostly tourists who come to visit Ipoh).

Their brunch menu include Eggs Benedict (served with choice of hamburger steak, turkey ham or smoked salmon, RM23), Bangers and Mash (chicken sausage, beef bacon and mashed potatoes, RM23), The French Kiss (French toast with banana, maple syrup and beef bacon, RM20) and a few other options.

They also served pastas such as Beef Bolognese (RM28), Spicy Aglio Olio (RM29), and Seafood Marinara (RM41). On the other hand, their savoury menu include Roast Chicken (RM29), Hunky Dory (RM35), and Beef Burger (RM33). They too serve pizza, salad, crepe and snacks such as wedges, meatball and nachos.

When we arrived at the cafe, it was already way past brunch time and so we decided to sit in for lunch instead. Fortunately, they also served Set Lunch Menu. Each set lunch comes with a choice of either Pilaf Rice OR Aglio Olio with either roast chicken OR grilled lamb and salad. It also comes with a free drink which is hot/ice peach tea or Americano. You can upgrade your drink to hot/iced latte by just adding RM3. The Set Lunch is priced at RM22. Let's take a look at the food and beverages.

I ordered pilaf rice with grilled lamb and therefore I would give a more detailed review on this as compared the other two. I was pleasantly surprise to see that the food were nicely served on really big plates. They looked really mouth watering and the meat portion was huge. I loved that the lamb meat was really juicy and the gravy was flavourful. It would have been better if more gravy were added to it because the pilaf rice was a little dry. I disliked the overwhelming taste of the parsley that was cooked with the rice. The salad was also drizzled with a little too much balsamic vinegar. Anyway, the vegetables were perfectly cooked and they tasted not bad.

The roast chicken was also juicy and the gravy went well with the meat. It's quite a balanced meal because they served small portion of rice (carbs), and more serving of the veggies and meat (protein). You can eat healthy even when you eat out. Now let's move on to their beverages.

We upgraded two of the drinks to iced latte and hot latte. The iced peach tea is complimentary.

It's a cozy place to sip on your coffee and enjoy your tea break here.
In case you wondered, they do served a variety of beverages from coffee to tea and specialty drinks. Sorry to say, but their beverages are quite pricey too. A cup of hot latte or tea (Harney and Sons) costs you about RM13. I liked that their iced latte were foamy and milky and if you don't enjoy your coffee unsweetened (like me), you can request for some brown sugar packets from the staff. So yeah, they don't serve your coffee with sugar and a glass  of water unless you ask. It's funny also that the hot latte was served in a really tiny cup and the iced latte came in a very big glass. It really took me some time to finish drinking it especially after you have had your meal. But I appreciate that their iced latte was not bad. The bigger the glass, the better right? (Cheers to the other caffeine addicts out there HAHA)

Well, they serve cakes all day long too. The other day I saw Oreo Cheesecake and Chocolate Cake at the counter. I didn't order because I was already so full. The price of cakes ranges from RM10 to RM16.

They have a mini stage built in the cafe.

On those days when the live performers are not performing on stage, you can go up and take your OOTD photos here. They recently provide live music entertainment for its customers which started in June.

So there you have it, I would really recommend you try out their set lunch menu if it is your first visit to this cafe. Don't worry, it's not crowded on weekends and public holiday. You can have a peace of mind enjoying your brunch here on a Sunday morning. I guess that's all from me now. See you again in my next post!
